What is a Maui Mystery?

A Maui Mystery begins as a conventional investigation of a crime. But something about the environment on this magical island leads the investigator far from where he or she believes they are headed. An open mind is necessary to reach a satisfactory conclusion, and the process is always mind-expanding.

Eyes of the Beholder

Spousal abuse. Crystal meth. Astrophysics.

A man who claims he’s from a parallel dimension.

All in a day’s work for a cop on Maui.

A wrong-way driver causes a devastating collision in paradise. Even police detective Keone Boyd, born and raised on the spirit-filled island of Maui, is not prepared for the investigation that follows. The facts lead him to an abused wife, an oily drug distributor, an observatory on the top of a dormant volcano, and a man who claims he’s traveled to Maui through an invisible contact between universes. He knows following the facts in paradise can take you far from where you expect or want to go, but this one takes him where he’s never gone before.

Frustrated, conflicted, and faced with deadly threats to himself and those he cares about, Keone uncovers events and theories that challenge his views of life, police work, and reality. How can one otherwise boring suspect, who believes left is right, impact the lives of so many? The answer to that question may only lie in the eyes of the beholder.

Every Story begins as an idea in my head.

My first idea became a story I shared with my friends and Family called Return to Center. I created bound copies at Kinko’s and gave them out by hand. For more information about this click on the Unpublished Books section, above. I still may publish it some day.

My second and third ideas stimulated me to write two self-published books using Amazon and Create Space. They were called Mirrored and Something More and were mysteries that took place on the island of Maui. For more information about these two books click on the Self-published Books section, above.

My third idea led to a third mystery set mostly on Maui, but also involving memories of a trip to Italy, Greece, and the Greek Islands. Babylon Books accepted this book, Pele’s Fire, and published it for me. You can find information about this in the Babylon Books section.

At this point, my publisher suggested I re-write my two self published books for professional publication, and these became Eyes of the Beholder and Voice of the Victim. Since these rewrites became totally new books, I asked and received permission to re-write the third book in the series, Pele’s Fire, and this became Soul of a Sleuth. I have added each oil these to the Babylon Books section as they were published.

The ideas keep on coming and constitute the final category of Rick’s Books, Works in Progress. These include books that are ready to be published and those still in the drafting or editing stages, and are represented by the title page of the manuscript and brief description. Until very recently, the boxed set of the Maui Mysteries Series was on this page, but it has now been published as an eBook. You will still find the three books in the autobiography I am writing for my kids in the Works in Progress section. The first part involves my life before they were aware of what was going on. I finished their copy of An Incremental Life: Before you knew it, it covered from 1950 - 1994 (the California Years - Part I) and gave it to them for Christmas in 2020. I am not sure if I’ll ever try to publish it, maybe they will. I’m still working on Part 2 and have decided it will cover 1994 - 2008 (the Indiana Years). I plan to give this part to them for Christmas in 2025. AT present, I plan one more part. Part 3 will cover from 2008 - 2016 (the Maui Years) and from 2016 to probably 2030, assuming I live that long (the California Years - Part II). My current plan is to give it to them for Christmas in 2030.

I have a filing cabinet full of other story ideas and my journals, which I started back in high school. We’ll see if any of that bares fruit.
